                      | There are over 60 species in this family. They are all found in the tropic regions of Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific. They live in a variety of habitats including the desert, the grasslands, and the forest. They are omnivorous and eat insects, fruit, birds, and other small animals. The have large bills topped with horny plates called casques. In most species the casque is hollow. Hornbills are usually large birds and vary in coloring.
The ancient Romans called hornbills Rhinoceros birds. Hornbills exhibit an unusual breeding behavior. The female nests in a natural hole or crevice in a tree or in rocks. Once she has located a nesting spot, she seals the outer entrance with mud. She leaves just enough room to allow her to get into the hole; then she seals up the rest of the hole, leaving a slit just large enough for her mate to pass her food! She stays in the nest hole after the chicks hatch and the male continues to bring her and the chicks food.
